THE IMPORTANCE OF NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR

We all live today in the era of the visual, of the nonverbal. People are continuously and excessively exposed to television, cinema and theater, and these media transmit a multitude of types and bits of information in nonverbal (NV) channels. From a young age children learn to understand the “NV language,” to decipher implicit codes and to make meaning of social situations from numerous, often very subtle NV nuances (including lighting, camera angles, music, and certainly facial expressions and body language). People learn to understand situations without having to receive verbal explanations, such as knowing instantaneously whether they are provided with facts (news), told a story (movies or series) or being manipulated (advertising) the minute they turn on their TV. “NV behavior” includes all expressive aspects that are “non-verbal,” that is, that they have no verbal content, words, or spoken and/or written language. The modern study of language acquisition began about twenty-five years ago, and it is no coincidence that its birthday followed fairly closely upon the birth of what we now call cognitive science.! One of the first human abilities that was shown to be "cognitive," in the sense of best being explained in terms of mental computations or rules acting on representations, was the child's acquisition of the syntax of his or her first language (Chomsky, 1959; Brown, 1958; Berko, 1958; Braine, 1963). It became clear early on that to understand why children say what they say, and how they learn to speak as adults, one must know what is in the child's mind, and that what is in the child's mind is best described in terms of "rules," "categories," "operations," and the like. MOTIVES FOR LEARNING

In assessing what might be done to improve the state of the curricular art , we are inevitably drawn into discussion of the nature of motives for learning and the objectives one might expect to attain in educating youth. Obviously, matters of such enormous scope can be considered only briefly here. Yet certain issues seem to be particularly in need of closer scrutiny in relation to the designing of curricula . In planning a curriculum, one properly distinguishes between the long-run objective one hopes to achieve and certain short-run steps that get one toward that objective. Those of a practical turn of mind are likely to say that little is served by stating long-term objectives unless one can propose short-run methods for their achievement.
