Mother Tongue and Second Language

Mother tongue refers to the language that a human learns from birth. Throughout this site, you will notice the words "mother tongue", "first language", and "native language" are often intermixed. These terms are all related to this same idea, and refer to the language a child is first exposed to, particularly from birth to 9 months. Children growing up in bilingual homes can have more than one mother tongue, provided that two languages were introduced at birth and equally developed through childhood. The level of development of children's mother tongue is a strong predictor of their second language development. Children who come to school with a solid foundation in their mother tongue develop stronger literacy abilities in the school language. The Nature of Writing Ability

Writing is the one of the four language skills and it is the most important process in learning English. It cannot be separated with every learning process experienced by the students as long as they are still in educational process. Kalayo Hasibuan (2007) [1] stated that writing is both process and a product. We learn to write by writing. Moreover Grenville (2001) [2] also point out that No one’s born knowing how to write-but it is a skill that most people can learn, and the more you do it, the easier it becomes. It is also stressed by Simon (2003) [3] good writing does not happen overnight. It involves a process.
